Adventide in the mountains

Today, for our second instalment of Adventide, we are so excited to welcome Claudi Baske, a mother and photographer living in the Bavarian Alps. Here Claudi shares with us her love of advent, and all the wonderful Christmassy moments her family share in the mountains, as well as one of her favourite Christmas recipes.

Christmas time is, for sure, one of our favourite times, especially since we are living in the mountains. Those cosy days when our home is flavoured by beeswax and bergamot oil, cinnamon and baked apples, cookies, wood and pine.

We love to be outdoors but since we moved into our new house, which felt like HOME from the very beginning, we are such home-bodies and I absolutely love it. Listening to Christmas songs whilst snowflakes dance in front of the window, it’s some kind of magic for me, because it’s the life I always dreamed of, when I was a little one.

The month of merry for us is filled with lots of family time, baking cookies, crafting ornaments and homemade presents for friends and family. Rolling beeswax candles, eating lots of traditional food and taking long walks in our little winter wonderland.
I am convinced that this is what the Christmas spirit is all about, intentional togetherness, living in the moment and taking it slow, listening to your heart and enjoying the moments of joy. The eyes of your littles shining bright when the first snow falls, their laughter when you’re dancing around the Christmas tree with them, their cuddles when cosying up on the sofa eating homemade cookies and watching Christmas movies.

Our Christmas decorations are all inspired by nature, treasures from the woods collected by the girls, and a mixture of handcrafted ornaments and little heirlooms, and lots of candles, but we keep it simple.

One of our favourite recipes is this chocolate dipped cinnamon-cardamom-ginger-cookies, very easy to make and so yummy.
what you need:
85g powdered sugar
15g vanilla sugar
130g soft butter
1 egg
1 pinch of salt
1 TS cinnamon
Some freshly ground ginger
4 pieces of clove, ground
1/2 TS freshly ground cardamom
240g flour (plus additional flour for the working surface)
1/2 TS of baking soda
  • Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.
  • Mix the powdered sugar, vanilla sugar together and beat with the butter until it’s creamy.
  • Mix all spices
  • Add the egg, salt, spices and then the flour and the baking powder into the sugar-butter mixture and combine.
  • Knead the dough well and roll it out on a floured surface.
Cut out as desired and put the cookies into the oven for about 10min (the baking time depends on how thick you make the cookies, they are finished, when they start to get a little bit of colour).
After cooling you can either decorate it with sugar or chocolate or eat them right away.
